The heater core removal instructions for other generation escorts abound around here but I found nothing about the 3rd generation. The Haynes manual is slightly better than worthless. Fortunately for us lucky 3rd Gen owners, the job is tremendously easier than depicted by other 1st and 2nd Gen owners on this board and elsewhere. It's a white plastic assembly and there are two clips that need to be disengaged so the assembly can be pushed over slightly to access the above noted bolt. Insert a small screwdriver to in two holes to do it. If you look around with a flashlight you can figure out where they are. This is true but when I tried to lift the dash up onto the front seats for better access to the core box the dash was still attached to the floor. There appeared to be a rivet Ford escort heater core install each side that allowed it to pivot foward but not be lifted up and out. As I contemplated different hacksaw options to remove the Ford escort heater core install I discovered there is actually just a pin on each side and when the dash assembly is worked back and forth, side to side, the assembly pins come out of the holes. The dash is very heavy and would be extremely hard to manuever without the aid of a helper while in the car. With the aid of my wife we lifted it onto the reclined front seats and this allowed adequate access to the heater core box. I recommend doing it this way instead...

The heater core looks like a very small radiator, and functions just the same. It is mounted under the dashboard. It provides the heat needed for the blower motor to warm the cabin. As the engine water pump circulates engine coolant through the heater core, it heats the heater core to engine temperature. When heat is desired, the blower motor blows air across the heater core, and sends heat from the engine into the cabin. On newer vehicles, when heat is not desired, the blend door actuators change the flow of air away from, or partially away from the heater core to reduce the amount of heat allowed into the cabin. Older vehicles used a more simple component called the heater control valve. This valve stops the flow of engine coolant into the heater core, and the core is cooled sufficiently to stop production of heat in the cabin. A failing heater core may cause a vehicle to smell of engine coolant inside the cabin. The majority of the smell will come from the vents while the heater is turned on, and from the floor under the dashboard. Also, the engine may being to run increasingly warmer until the vehicle is repaired. The worst case scenario is engine overheating, and possible engine head gasket failure. If the heater core is simply clogged, the heater in the vehicle will blow slightly warm air, even on the hottest setting. If the heater core is leaking, it is not advised to drive the vehicle as overheating can result from any coolant leak. In this situation, towing the vehicle to a repair facility is the best course of action. When the heater core is simply clogged, it will not affect drivability in any way, but passenger comfort may be negatively affected. Heater core issues...

Asked by Josh Apr 01, at I have a Ford Escort Lx Wagon. To replace the heater core requires about 7 hours of mechanic labor or 12ish hours of mine. The heater core has already even bypassed due to a leak. Is there a way to still get hot air inside without replacing the heater core? Ebay has those little 12 volt heaters, not much heat but sometimes a little is all it takes. You could re plumb you system and install an auxiliary heater in the back, I think those are listed in EBay also. Josh answered 3 years ago. I will go check it out right now. When you say install an auxiliary heater, are you talking about a heater within the engine compartment or a heater inside the car in the back? Either way, I will look up "auxiliary heater on ebay and see what turns up. The heater core is heating properly. It gets properly hot. Water is circulating through the hoses and feels warm to the touch.
